You've probably gone on to a search engine in order to look for something quickly or to conduct some research recently. Looking for something on a search engine can usually cause havoc for searchers when other unanticipated sites come up first.
As entrepreneurs, we need to address the importance of search engine optimisation (SEO) and the benefits that it brings to business.
Being Number 1
One of the challenges that entrepreneurs and small business owners face is their online presence. It the insecurity of not being at the top of potential customers' searches that bothers businesses. How can we overcome this?
Let's have a look at a hypothetical search:
Say we wanted to find a dog walker because we didn't have time. What would usually happen is that we would search 'dog walker' - and this is what would come up. We can see that the results at the top of the search list are the paid advertisements from dog walking businesses.
As entrepreneurs we have the choice to either pay for SEO or we can focus on other online methods to gain traffic towards our website.
In this scenario, the top of the search results will receive some of the highest amounts of traffic, and that's what they're paying for. If you don't want to pay such high amounts directly to the search engine, you can contact the business who has one of the top search engine results and negotiate a lower price for implementing an advertisement [for your business] on their browser.
Being number 1 definitely has its advantages. One of the highest returns is the convenience for potential customers. The last thing a customer wants is to travel down pages of other business's websites in order to find yours - it's painful and unnecessary - so treat your customers well, and be number 1.
Traffic is Key
If you have only just launched your website, unless you pay for it, there is a slim chance that you would be at the top of the search results. It's important to gain views and they will incrementally boost your website's ranking.
As I previously mentioned: Traffic is the key. Some ways to boost traffic include:
- Opening social media accounts across ALL platforms, e.g. Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
- Spreading the word among employees, friends and family.
- Advertising the website in print media
- Hiring an opinion leader to communicate to your target audience.
If you're not number 1, you're probably not doing enough work with traffic to be there. Make sure that you work on momentum and spreading the word about your platform.
